March In Like A Lamb

This is Ben keeping an eye on me as I cook.  See the snow melting in the background?

It was nice enough to have the kitchen door open as I got dinner on the stove!  I love that first taste of spring, don't you?

And here's what we had.  Rapini (broccoli raab in the U.S?) with kidney beans ...

On a bed of quinoa.  Delicious!

What did you have for dinner?

Of A Certain Age

I went to the coffee shop this morning to do a little writing.  I sat at a table near the window and ordered my usual, a caramel macchiato.  At the table next to me were three women of a certain age; my age, involved in a lively conversation.  They laughed as they spoke, touching frequently to punctuate what was said. Their hands, spotted with age, flew with purpose when words just weren't enough.

Then they grew quiet and looked over at me; I'd been caught staring.  Avoiding their eyes, I feigned a sure and sudden interested in my notebook.  I may have looked embarrassed, but I wasn't.

I was envious.

At another table were four young women probably in their twenties.  Each held a cellphone; they glanced at the screens repeatedly, seemed distracted and listless.  When they spoke, it was barely above a whisper. They didn't even notice me. I was not envious of them.

Not at all.

Without Being Planned, Organized or Rehearsed

Isn't that the way it goes ... the way the best things happen?  Often disguised as something unwelcome or uncomfortable.

And then when you're ready to see it, it's revealed to you and you're glad you stuck it out, that you showed up.

For yourself.

Bad Weather on the Way

There's a winder storm warning for southern Ontario; it's expected to hit sometime this afternoon. Looking out my window, it's difficult to believe; truly the calm before ...

WARNING:  Snow, heavy at times, and blowing snow is expected with more intense snowfall expected to develop this evening. Visibilities are expected to be poor tonight with wind gust as high as 70 km/h in some locations creating whiteout conditions.

Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm are likely by Wednesday morning. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Pretty intense, right?  Well, I'm ready but a little anxious as you can imagine.  So to comfort myself and feel like I have some control over the situation (ha!), I'm cooking up a lot of soup.

Wish me luck.  I just hope we don't lose power.
